Problem of the Week

A new problem every Monday that challenges participants of all ages to think creatively and apply their math skills. Perfect for a weekly mental challenge.

Abigail and Ben meet at the track to run laps. The track is an oval with two 100 meter straights and two 100 meter semicircular turns (as measured in lane 1). Each lane is 1 meter apart. If Abigail runs in lane 1 and Ben runs in lane 6 and they start at the same time from the start/finish line running clockwise around the track at 10 km/hr, after how many laps for Abigail will Abigail pass Ben? Both runners stay in their lane for the entire time. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.
