Privacy Policy
The Math Contest is a free math competition for students. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you — and, for younger solvers, your parents — have over it.
When you create an account, we collect your first and last name, the public nickname you choose, your email address, your birth date, and optionally your city, state/region, and country. When you compete, we store your submitted answers, scores, and the team you competed with.
Like almost every website, our servers also keep routine technical logs: IP address, browser type, pages visited, and the approximate city you signed in from (used only for the community map).
Your information is used to run the contest: scoring and ranking submissions, maintaining leaderboards and team standings, awarding prizes, verifying your email, and sending contest-related notices such as score results. We also use your birth date for age-limited divisions and birthday recognition.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not run ads or third-party trackers.
The contest is public: your nickname, the scores attached to it, and the profile details you choose to display appear on leaderboards and your profile page. For solvers under 13 we show only your nickname in these public places. Your email address, birth date, and exact location are never shown publicly.
We use a single login session cookie so the site remembers you. It contains no personal information beyond an identifier and expires after two weeks. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
The Math Contest is written for students, and visitors of all ages are welcome. For solvers under 13 we follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):
- We collect the minimum needed to compete: name, nickname, contact email, and birth date.
- Public displays are limited to the child's self-chosen nickname.
- A parent or guardian may ask the site administrator for a log of their child's recorded activity, so the data we hold can be reviewed, or request that the account be deleted entirely. Email us to make either request.
You can edit your profile details or change your password at any time. To deactivate your account, request a copy of your data, or have it deleted entirely, email us or use the contact form after signing in. Deactivated accounts are removed from public leaderboards; records we must keep for contest integrity are stripped of anything identifying beyond what the contest itself requires.
Passwords are stored hashed, the site forces a secure connection over HTTPS, session cookies are HTTP-only, and access to production data is limited to the site operators. No online service can guarantee perfect security, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
If we change this policy materially, we will post the updated version on this page and update the date below. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
Questions about this policy, or anything about your data? Write to themathcontest@olemiss.edu or use the contact form.
